Quote-Response

"But it seems to me that once you begin a gesture it's a fatal not to go through with it." (Updike, 19)

I believe this was an important passage in the story because the narrator made it seem like if he was going to take his apron off than he had to go through with quitting his job. This may have been the main reason he ended up quitting his job.

The phrase became an intrest to me because of the narrators beliefs. It seems as if he did not want to quit his job but was forced to because after taking his apron off he had to go through with it. If I was to say I was going to do something, I would. I rarley back out of things and I strongly believe this was the narrators point with this specific passage.

  1. Hi, Jamie. I agree that this passage is important to the story. It indicates that Sammy can't back down. The word "fatal" interests me. Either it indicates how seriously he takes his actions, that changing course would be like death, or it indicates he is young and perhaps prone to exaggeration. I think I both take him seriously and sympathize with his youth. Nancy
